Welcome to game and app flighting on XBOX consoles and Windows PCs with the XBOX Insider Program! This topic provides answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about flighting with the XBOX Insider Program.

How does a user become an XBOX Insider? Are there any restrictions?

There is no sign-up process to become an XBOX Insider. Users that want to join the XBOX Insider Program can download the XBOX Insider Hub app from the Microsoft Store app on their device (available in all regions). After they accept the XBOX Insider Program Terms of Use, they’re considered XBOX Insiders. To accept the XBOX Insider Program Terms of Use, the user must be 18+ based on the birth date associated with their Microsoft account. There are no additional restrictions.

How do users report bugs or issues when participating in the XBOX Insider Program?

On XBOX consoles, XBOX Insiders can report bugs on console via Report a problem, which is available from the Microsoft Store as part of the XBOX Insider bundle. To Report a problem:
  1. Press and hold the XBOX button on the controller.
  2. From the power menu, select Report a problem.
  3. Select an appropriate Category and Subcategory.
  4. Include a title and description for the bug, and a screenshot/video if applicable.
Feedback submitted from Report a problem is secure and not visible to the public. Report a problem feedback is delivered in a daily e-mail summary from an internal Microsoft email address. Report a problem is only available on XBOX consoles. On Windows PCs, the Windows Feedback Hub is the preferred bug reporting method. The Windows Feedback Hub is installed by default when Windows 10 is installed. Feedback submitted from the Windows Feedback Hub is not secure and will be visible to the public unless the title is configured for Private Audience.

Do users have access to the screenshots or videos submitted from Report a problem?

No, users are unable to access the screenshots or videos submitted through Report a problem. For confidential titles we recommend enabling Embargo in the game’s XBOX settings page in Partner Center. This prevents users from capturing screenshots or videos, and prevents the game from appearing in presence (preventing others from seeing the game is being played). For more information, see XBOX embargo.

Are XBOX Insiders subject to a Non-Disclosure Agreement?

All Microsoft employee XBOX Insiders are subject to a Non-Disclosure Agreement as part of their employment agreement with Microsoft. Public XBOX Insiders aren’t subject to a Non-Disclosure Agreement. When flighting a confidential title to public XBOX Insiders, we can ask participants to agree to the XBOX Insider Program Standard Non-Sharing Terms of Use, which asks users to not share content or information about the playtest with others. If a user breaks the Non-Sharing Terms of Use, we can take action against their XBOX account up to and including a permanent ban from XBOX services. View the XBOX Insider Program Standard Non-Sharing Terms of Use.

How do I request promotional codes for a flight?

Please see Request promotional codes in the XBOX Insider Program flighting documentation. You’ll need to request enough promotional codes to cover the entire target audience (one code per participant).

What criteria do I need to meet before I can flight with the XBOX Insider Program?

Speak to your Microsoft contacts to learn more about policies and requirements before you can flight with the XBOX Insider Program.

Does a user need to be an XBOX Insider before I can give them access to my flight?

No. We can grant any user access to an XBOX Insider Program flight even before they are an XBOX Insider. Once the user installs the XBOX Insider Hub app and accepts the XBOX Insider Program Terms of Use, they’ll automatically be eligible for any flights based on the target audience criteria (including if the user was targeted by their Gamertag).

Can I control the timing of my flight or flight content (announcements, surveys, etc.)?

Yes, we can configure a flight, or specific content within that flight (for example, announcements or surveys), to be enabled or disabled at a specific date/time. For flights targeting public XBOX Insiders, if not otherwise specified, we will target 11AM Pacific Time on the expected flight start date to open the flight.

Can I monetize my game/app while flighting in the XBOX Insider Program?

Generally, it’s not possible to monetize products flighted with the XBOX Insider Program. If you wish to monetize your product, consider the XBOX Game Preview program. For more information, speak to your Microsoft contacts, or review the XBOX Games Store Policy in the XBOX Publisher Guide.

Does the XBOX Insider Program have preconfigured audiences, or do I need to have my own?

There are millions of XBOX Insiders today, and the XBOX Insider Team can help define a target audience for your flight based on your criteria. Alternatively, you can provide an audience of your own (in the form of a list of Gamertags).

What criteria can I use to select a target audience?

We can filter based on several criteria related to region, language, device type, or user owned games or apps (from the same publisher). We can’t filter based on criteria like demographics, gaming preferences, or interests.

How do users access my game/app through the XBOX Insider Program?

Once the flight has been configured by the XBOX Insider Team and the product has been published with the appropriate restrictions in Partner Center, the target audience will access the flight from the XBOX Insider Hub app. The XBOX Insider Hub is available from the Store app on Console and PC devices. The steps for joining most game flights in the XBOX Insider Hub are the same:
  1. Install the XBOX Insider Hub app from the Store.
  2. Launch the XBOX Insider Hub app.
  3. Sign-in with an approved account.
  4. From the XBOX Insider Hub, navigate to Previews and then select the Game or App name being flighted.
  5. Select Join.
  6. Wait to be redirected to the Store to install the game/app!

Are there any associated costs for flighting with the XBOX Insider Program?

There are no costs associated with the XBOX Insider Program for studios/publishers or participants. Yes, the XBOX Insider Hub supports linking to an external URL from an Announcement. On XBOX consoles, linking an Announcement to a URL will launch the URL in the Edge browser. On PC, an Announcement linked to a URL will launch the URL in the default browser.

Do I need to have a definitive start and end date for my flight?

No, start and end dates are flexible. The XBOX Insider Team will use the Start Date and End Date provided during onboarding to prioritize configuring the flight, and will confirm before enabling the flight or expanding the audience.

I completed all the steps to set up a flight, but I don’t see my flight in the XBOX Insider Hub?

Before a flight is enabled for the target audience, the XBOX Insider Team completes an end-to-end test pass to ensure all aspects of the flight are functioning. This test pass can’t be completed until the product is published to the RETAIL sandbox. A member of the XBOX Insider Team will reach out to confirm the flight is enabled once the end-to-end test pass completes.

Can I gift digital rewards to participants who take part in my flight?

Yes! Digital rewards are a great way to increase participation and engagement in a flight. The XBOX Insider Program is unable to distribute digital rewards, but are able to provide a list of XBOX Insiders registered for a flight if necessary. We recommend utilizing in-game functionality to distribute digital rewards. Consult with your Microsoft account manager for more ideas if in-game functionality is not available.
