The game ran close to industry standards everywhere else, but the pause menu drew ~75% of the console’s power budget — industry average was 55–60%.
The insight
On Star Wars Outlaws’ pause menu:- The graphics behind the menu are frozen.
- Many game systems are already paused.
The change: drop to 1 FPS after 30 seconds idle
After 30 seconds of inactivity on the pause menu, framerate is dropped from the platform-native rate (30/40/60/144 depending on platform) all the way down to 1 FPS. The moment the player returns, the game immediately resumes at full framerate — no stutter, no input delay. This mirrors the studio’s existing PC behavior for unfocused windows.Measured impact
While Eco Mode is active, pause-menu power draw drops from ~75% to 18–20% of the console budget.Real-world equivalencies
An hour idling on Star Wars Outlaws’ pause menu on XBOX Series X went from ~0.19 kWh to ~0.05 kWh — a 0.14 kWh saving, equal to ~51 g of CO₂ emissions avoided (US 2024 grid average). At 10,000 players idling for one hour, that’s 510 kg of CO₂ avoided — equivalent to 1,299 miles driven by an average gas passenger vehicle (EPA equivalency calculator). All from a relatively small feature.Ubisoft Play Green
Star Wars Outlaws’ Eco Mode supports Ubisoft’s Play Green strategy and complements industry efforts like XBOX’s energy-aware updates and the Playing for the Planet Alliance.Takeaways for other studios
- Anywhere the world is frozen, aggressive framerate drops are safe. Pause menus, inventory screens with static backgrounds, and post-match summaries are candidates.
- 1 FPS is not a typo. If nothing on screen is animating, you don’t need more.
- A short idle timer preserves responsiveness. 30 seconds is short enough to catch most idle time without annoying quick returners.
- Certification power reports are how you find these outliers. Everything else in the game was fine; only the pause menu stood out.
