With a global gaming community of over 3.1 billion, Microsoft and game developers are uniquely positioned to drive meaningful environmental progress — without compromising the integrity or quality of the gaming experience. XBOX was the first console platform to introduce specialized tools for measuring energy consumption and carbon emissions. These tools, built with game creators, aim to demystify and diminish energy costs for gamers and reduce the carbon footprint of game development.

Why energy efficiency matters

Electricity that powers consumer electronics — including gaming consoles — is generated from a mix of carbon-heavy fossil fuels and renewable sources. Roughly 75% of the energy and carbon footprint across XBOX’s value chain comes from fossil-fuel electricity powering consoles globally, and about 50% of that segment is attributable to gameplay itself. Identifying and implementing energy efficiency measures for gameplay — without degrading the experience — is environmentally advantageous and directly benefits players through reduced energy bills and cooler, quieter hardware.
“But I’m just one little game?” Not true. Consider a title averaging 0.35 kW on a PC device, played 10 hours/week, with 80,000 weekly active users:
  • 0.35 kW × 10 hours = 3.5 kWh per week, per user
  • (3.5 kWh × 80,000 WAU) × 52 weeks = 14,560,000 kWh per year
Using a weighted average global emissions factor of 0.334 kg CO₂e per kWh:
  • 0.334 × 14,560,000 = 4,863 metric tonnes CO₂e per year
That’s equivalent to ~12.5M car miles driven, 5.4M pounds of coal burned, or carbon sequestered by 5.7k acres of forest. A 10% efficiency improvement is suddenly impactful.

What we want to achieve

The XBOX Sustainability Toolkit aims to:
  • Highlight opportunities for energy efficiency that lower the energy demand and carbon footprint of players.
  • Provide targeted data on the best areas to introduce efficiency improvements.
  • Let developers see the baseline energy performance of their titles on XBOX Series X|S.
  • Deliver detailed, actionable reports where inefficiency is observed.
  • Partner with developers and publishers on a reliable testing process.

The XBOX Sustainability Toolkit

GDK and Power Monitor tools

Real-time energy consumption feedback down to the millisecond. Establish a baseline, measure GPU usage granularly, and pinpoint inefficiencies. Includes an API for custom profiling and a devkit front-panel Power Load % readout.

Dynamic Power States (DPS)

Let the driver dynamically scale GPU power based on rendering workload. One API call — SetDriverHintX(DRIVER_HINT_SET_DYNAMIC_POWER, 1) — can unlock 10–15% additional savings on top of Sustainability Toolkit techniques.

Certification power reports

Certification produces a bespoke Sustainability Power Report measuring your title’s power consumption across common in-game areas. Contact your Microsoft rep to request one.

Partner Center dashboards

Studio-level view of power, energy, and carbon footprint for every released title, updated monthly. Compare month-over-month to measure the impact of updates.
