Complementing the Lab platform baselines captured with PIX, the global platform baselines come from anonymized real-world telemetry. In 2022 XBOX released a limited run of enhanced XBOX Series X|S consoles with power-supply energy monitoring. This telemetry provides insights across a wide range of user setups — including SSD, USB, networking, and power-regulation losses — to train data models that report the AC power consumption of titles as measured at the wall socket. XBOX is also partnering with Carbon Trust and other global tech companies to develop a common methodology for tracking usage emissions from connected devices.

What the telemetry shows

Enhanced XBOX Series X|S consoles send anonymized power telemetry back to XBOX services. This lets us determine the AC power consumption of consoles across a range of scenarios, including game and app usage — and to break averages down by studio, developer, publisher, genre, or feature set. XBOX Series X
  • Global average game power: 122 W
  • Global average app power: 51 W
XBOX Series S
  • Global average game power: 61 W
  • Global average app power: 31 W
These averages remain fairly consistent over time. They are updated periodically.

Lab vs. global baselines

  • Lab baselines — controlled measurement via PIX on standardized hardware. Best for comparing your title to others.
  • Global baselines — aggregated real-world telemetry from shipping titles. Best for understanding how your title actually behaves at scale.
The Partner Center sustainability dashboard surfaces global telemetry once your title is live.
