# Update hosts (XbUpdateHosts.exe)

> Update hosts (XbUpdateHosts.exe)

Use this tool to map a specified host/domain name to a specified IP address on the XBOX Development Kit. Issues with name resolution have been more prevalent when developing in a work-from-home environment. **XbUpdateHosts** provides a specific IP address for a specific host/domain name, overriding how the XBOX Development Kit would normally resolve that name. This tool requires user input, which configures the HOSTS file on the XBOX Development Kit and isn't exposed as an automatic solution for name resolution issues.

Issues encountered with name resolution have been most common when using Run from PC deployment. For more information about the use of **XbUpdateHosts** with Run from PC deployment, see [XbUpdateHosts usage with Run from PC](#XbUpdateHosts_RfPC) later in this topic.

## Command-line format

```
xbupdatehosts [command-independent-options] <command> [command-specific-options]
### XbUpdateHosts add
Adds or replaces the provided host name mapping to the console.
#### Usage
**xbupdatehosts add \<*target host name*> \<*IP address*>**
@auto can be specified for the host name to use the development PC host name and fully qualified domain name.
@auto can be specified for the IP address parameter to indicate the IP address that's connecting to the console is used for the value. This is useful if the development PC is connected to multiple networks.
### XbUpdateHosts remove
Removes the provided host name mapping from the console.
#### Usage
**xbupdatehosts remove \<*target host name*>**
@auto can be specified for the host name to remove both the development PC host name and the fully qualified domain name.
### XbUpdateHosts list
Lists all host name mappings that are stored on the console.
#### Usage
**xbupdatehosts list**
This command outputs the list of host name mappings that are on the console.
### XbUpdateHosts backup
Creates a backup of all host name mappings that are stored on the console.
#### Usage
**xbupdatehosts backup \<*backup file name*>**
### XbUpdateHosts restore
Restores all host name mappings to the console from a file.
#### Usage
**xbupdatehosts restore \<*backup file name*>**
## Command-line examples
Common command-line examples for **XbUpdateHosts** are as follows.
* Add a mapping for the current development PC based on the address connecting to the console: **xbupdatehosts add @auto @auto**
* Add a mapping for another host based on the address connecting to the console: **xbupdatehosts add other.host.name @auto**
* Remove a mapping: **xbupdatehosts remove other.host.name**
* Backup mappings: **xbupdatehosts backup .\hostsbackup.txt**
* Restore mappings: **xbupdatehosts restore .\hostsbackup.txt**
## XbUpdateHosts usage with Run from PC
**XbUpdateHosts** allows for modifying the Hosts file to provide a static IP for resolution. This can help resolve domain name resolution issues that are encountered during Run from PC deployment.
Run from PC over XBTP (non-Server Message Block (SMB) share syntax) sends the fully qualified domain name to the console. This name is found by using **ipconfig /all** and adding the "Primary DNS Suffix" to the end of your development PC name. An example of the format for a fully qualified domain name is as follows.
mypc.domain.example.com
