# Reboot (xbreboot.exe)

> Reboot (xbreboot.exe)

Use this tool to restart or turn off a remote console.

| Column 1 |
| - |
| **xbreboot** \[/S] \[/T:\<*Number of Hours*>] \[/P\[:]\[*MAC address*]] \[/Q\[:]\[MAC address]] \[/W\[:]\[*MAC address*]] \[/X\[\[:]*address*\[*+\<accesskey>*]] |

| Option | Description |
| - | - |
| /S | Specifies that the Development Kit is to be completely turned off, not restarted. |
| /T:\<*Number of Hours*> | Used in combination with /S, this option specifies the number of hours to wait before turning the console back on. |
| /P\[:]\[*MAC address*] | Puts the console into *Connected Standby*. This requires that the dev kit has its power mode set to Instant On. |
| /W\[:]\[*device ID or MAC address*] | Attempts to wake the dev kit from Connected Standby. |
| /Q\[:]\[*MAC address*] | Queries whether the console is in Connected Standby, the power mode is set to support Instant On, and the console allows remote turn-on connections. |
| /X\[:]*address\[+\<accesskey>]* | - Use this option to specify the host name or address (shown as **Tools IP** on the console) of a targeted console without changing the default console. For details about setting a host name for a console, see [Setting a host name for the console IP address](/home/setup-install/dev-kit-settings/setting-a-hostname). - If you don't use this option, the default console (previously set by [Connect (xbconnect.exe)](/tools/tools-console/commandlinetools/xbconnect)) is used. - Use the *accesskey* string to provide console access only to those people who have the access key. - Set the access key by using the command **xbconfig** **accesskey=your-key**, and then restart your console to make the access key effective. - To access a console that's configured with an access key, include a plus sign (+) and the access key after the IP address or host name of the console. - If an access key is provided when the default console is set by [xbconnect](/tools/tools-console/commandlinetools/xbconnect), the access key is stored as part of the default console's address. - For more information about access keys, see [xbconfig accesskey](/tools/tools-console/commandlinetools/xbconfig). |
| /LC | Specify the locale code. Used to override the default locale code |

## Remarks

The **xbreboot** tool always performs a cold restart. If you want only to terminate a running title, which is much faster than restarting, use **xbapp terminate pkg\_full\_name**. This works, regardless of the current state of the app - running, suspended, or other. For details, see [Application Management (xbapp.exe)](/tools/tools-console/commandlinetools/xbapp).

### Timed Power Off/On

In order to be accessible remotely, many XBOX devkits, both in automation labs as well as on developers' desks, are left powered on 24x7, with the last couple of years seeing shifts to more remote work increasing this behavior. Even when idle, this results in a power draw of 30+ W. As these devkits are typically only used during set hours during the work week, much of the time they are idle and unnecessarily wasting energy. Starting in the June 2022 GDK, we've added a new flag to 'Xbreboot /S', the '/T:\<time in hours>' flag, which allows developers to power off their console (Energy Saver mode, using roughly .5 W) for a user specified number of hours before automatically powering the console back on. This can be called manually, by doing something like 'XbReboot /S /T:14' before stopping work for the day, but we recommend using the Task Scheduler built into Windows (or another scheduled task system) to setup working hours where the devkit will be powered on, and allowing it to remain powered off the rest of the time.

We are providing some sample command line calls to schtasks.exe which create a task in Windows Task Scheduler (these can be further modified via the Task Scheduler UI after creation). These command lines should be modified to include the IP Address or hostname of the desired console as well as changing the start time and number of hours to reflect an individual's work schedule.

**Monday through Thursday task:**

schtasks /create /tn "Weekday Console Shutdown of console \<IP Address or hostname> from 6pm - 8am" /tr ""C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft GDK\bin\XbReboot.exe" /x:\<IP Address or hostname> /S /T:14" /sc weekly /d MON,TUE,WED,THU /st 18:00

**Friday night task to power off through the weekend:**

schtasks /create /tn "Weekend Console Shutdown of console \<IP Address or hostname> 6pm Friday - 8am Monday" /tr ""C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft GDK\bin\XbReboot.exe" /x:\<IP Address or hostname> /S /T:62" /sc weekly /d FRI /st 18:00

For information on using **xbreboot** remotely, see [Using the GDK remotely](/build/console-features/console-workflows/using-gdk-remotely).
