# Smart Delivery

> Smart Delivery

Use this topic to understand how to package your title by using Smart Delivery configurations. Smart Delivery is a user-facing feature that allows them to purchase a game once and receive the "best" version that's available on XBOX One family consoles and XBOX Series consoles. Smart Delivery doesn't require the user to take additional action or spend additional money.

A Smart Delivery game is configured as a base game product that contains both an XBOX One base package and an XBOX Series X|S base package. The XBOX One package can be built on the GDK (Microsoft Game Development Kit) or XBOX One ERA (XBOX One Software Development Kit). We recommend that you use the Microsoft Game Development Kit (GDK), if possible, as it is newer and has more features than the XDK.

For access to Smart Delivery configuring and publishing documentation, contact your Microsoft representative.

## Enable Smart Delivery for new games

You can support a new game that hasn't shipped on XBOX One family consoles and XBOX Series consoles by using Smart Delivery. Building a Smart Delivery title is like building a single generation title. To build a Smart Delivery title, create an XBOX One base package and an XBOX Series X|S base package. For more information, see [Getting started packaging for XBOX consoles](https://devdocs.xbox.com/build/core-features/common/packaging/overviews/packaging-getting-started-for-console.md).

The GDK is required for XBOX Series X|S. We recommend that you use the GDK to build for XBOX One as well. For more information, see [Developing a new title with the GDK](https://learn.microsoft.com/gaming/gdk/docs/gdk-dev/get-started/overviews/developing-new-titles-on-gamecore).

### Best practices

Use [Intelligent Delivery](https://devdocs.xbox.com/build/core-features/common/packaging/overviews/intelligentdelivery.md) to define which portions of your title's content can be selectively installed based on console generation, language, or custom tags such as game modes and maps. This reduces the size of game downloads and installations, and it saves users' time and storage space so that they can get into the game as quickly as possible.

For more information about targeting portions of your title for specific console generations, see [Intelligent Delivery: devices specifiers](https://devdocs.xbox.com/build/core-features/common/packaging/intelligentdelivery-device.md).

For more information about building test discs for Smart Delivery scenarios, see [Creating cross-generation test discs](https://devdocs.xbox.com/build/core-features/common/packaging/creating-cross-gen-test-discs.md).

## Enable Smart Delivery for released XBOX One games

You can support an existing XBOX One game that's already been released by using Smart Delivery. Enabling Smart Delivery on an existing XBOX One game requires adding an XBOX Series X|S package onto the existing game product. Users can then see the game as one purchasable title. After purchase, the XBOX console can intuitively download and install the appropriate content to the user's device.

> [!NOTE]
>
> Smart Delivery can't be used for a released XBOX One title under the following conditions.
>
> * An XBOX Series X|S version of the game has already been released.
> * A cross-generation bundle has already been released that contains XBOX One and XBOX Series X|S versions of the game.

XBOX One games that are currently only playable on XBOX Series X|S due to backward compatibility are eligible for Smart Delivery support. The GDK Game OS is required for XBOX Series X|S. We recommend enabling Smart Delivery for XBOX One titles that are built by using ERA and then porting the ERA to the GDK.

For more information, see [Microsoft Game Development Kit porting guide for XBOX One](https://devdocs.xbox.com/build/console-features/porting-from-xbox-one-era/porting-guide-for-existing-era.md).

## Create discs for Smart Delivery games

Smart Delivery supports publishing discs for your title for single and [dual SKU-cross-generation](https://devdocs.xbox.com/build/console-features/cross-gen/cross-gen-dual-sku.md) compatibility.

### Best practices

Use the following best practices to properly package an XBOX One and an XBOX Series X|S title that are both available.

* Include both packages on the disc. This provides the best possible experience for users to install and play offline on either console generation.
* Specify a subset of each package that you want to include on the disc to reduce network installations. Consider which parts of your game are most critical to getting users into your game as quickly as possible. Determine which parts can be downloaded later or in the background. For more information, see [Intelligent Delivery introduction](https://devdocs.xbox.com/build/core-features/common/packaging/overviews/intelligentdelivery.md).
* Don't create separate XBOX One and XBOX Series X|S discs for the same Amaray case. Instead, use the [multi-disc](https://devdocs.xbox.com/build/core-features/common/packaging/packaging-multi-disc.md) solution to include additional downloadable content (DLC) discs while gating access to both games through one licensed disc. This constrains the user to a single license even when they're physically purchasing a game bundle. For more information, see [Make package (makepkg.exe)](https://devdocs.xbox.com/build/core-features/common/packaging/deployment/makepkg.md).

If your title only exists on XBOX One, include the XBOX One package on the disc. When staggering the game's release (publishing the title on XBOX One first, and then publishing the XBOX Series X|S binary later), you can create discs that only include the XBOX One package in support of the initial game release. Later, when the XBOX Series X|S package is released, users can download, install, and play the optimized game on the XBOX Series X|S console by using the same disc.

> [!NOTE]
>
> Smart Delivery game discs that only contain XBOX Series X|S content isn't a supported scenario. If a disc contains only XBOX Series X|S content, it's treated as an XBOX Series X|S-exclusive title.

### Validation

As part of the end-to-end validation of your Smart Delivery title, it's important to validate the disc experience that users will encounter. For more information about how to create Smart Delivery test discs, see [Creating cross-generation test discs](https://devdocs.xbox.com/build/core-features/common/packaging/creating-cross-gen-test-discs.md#ID5RX).
